Rechtenbach Appointed Mayor

Jerry Rechtenbach was appointed as Taylorsville’s interim mayor to fill the remainder of Russ Wall’s term until January 2014.

Rechtenbach was one of 14 candidates who applied for the post and were interviewed for over three hours by the Taylorsville City Council. After the first round of questioning, the field was narrowed down to three candidates - Rechtenbach, Janice Auger Rasmussen, and Dan Fazzini. The final vote for Rechtenbach was 4-1 with Larry Johnson as the only dissenter.

Since Rechtenbach is a council member, his seat is now vacant and the council will be taking applications for the next 14 days and will begin the process again.

The new mayor has served for nine years as a council member. Before that he served on the city’s planning and zoning commission. Professionally, Rechtenbach is an independent broker of insurance and worked as a transportation engineer for 27 years. He will be turning over his business to a family member.

Here were some of Rechtenbach’s remarks:

“Aggressive measures are needed to reinvigorate and revitalize the city. While we have undertaken capital projects in the past, we must do more.  Taylorsville can and should become a recognized destination center. After all, Taylorsville is the heart of the Salt Lake Valley and our location is unmatched.

“We need a dramatic rebirth of the Family Center on 5400 S. Redwood Road so new businesses have an environment in which to thrive. We need a creation of a new and major employment center on the UDOT property at 6200 South Bangerter Highway. While we have taken the first few steps, the journey ahead will require partnerships, perseverance, and perspective.

“Neighborhood revitalization is a top priority. We need to improve and beautify public rights-of-way, increase code enforcement, and partner with communities to enhance Neighborhood Watch programs, CERT teams, emergency preparedness, and neighborhood clean up programs.”

The new mayor will be sworn in on Thursday, January 10 at noon at Taylorsville City Hall - 2600 W. Taylorsville Blvd.

  1. Good to have a new mayor. I will be contacting him regarding a big issue we've been having for two years that no one seems to care about (including the old mayor).
